For most parents in urban households, mealtimes are extremely stressful. It is an uphill battle to ensure that fussy eaters are consuming a balanced meal, with all the right nutrients. Children demanding for nutrient empty 'junk' food only adds to the problem. Worryingly, this means that even kids who seem healthy may actually be deficient in essential nutrients.

For many of us, malnutrition and malnourishment are terms that are associated with children living in poverty-stricken rural areas. But, recent studies have revealed that a large number of children from middle-class and wealthy households are not 'eating well' and are, therefore, nutrient-deficient.

In fact, according to a report by National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau, micronutrients in below normal levels has been recorded in Indian children as their intake is less than recommended dietary allowance. Another study by National Family Health Survey revealed that 25% of children from wealthy households in India are poorly nourished and show less than normal growth for their age. Record 63% children in urban areas suffer from iron deficiency.

In today's fast paced lifestyle, most families tend to sit down for a meal with their families only once a day. Unfortunately, even that is becoming rare. Therefore, a lot of the time children's diet is being supervised by carers, either at school or at home. However, as a parent, you can ensure that your children's food intake is both nutrient-rich and tasty, most of the time. Here are a few tips to help you along the way:
» Lunch boxes should be filled with foods such as whole grain sandwiches, fresh fruit, dried fruit, fruit juices, vegetable pieces, peanut and raisins, milk and yoghurt. Feel free to experiment with food art for your little one!

» Children tend to eat a lot of junk food, which is easily available outside school premises, as soon as the day is over. Try to pack a healthy treat for them for afterwards, which they can enjoy on their travel back home.

» Set a good example at home by only preparing appetizing, fresh and healthy meals. Encourage children to exercise from an early age
