Welcome to Issue #2 of the Virtualization Newsletter,
Save the date: Mark your calendars for January 18, 2012 when we'll be holding a live online event with the RHEV 3.0 team going much deeper into RHEV and fun guest speakers too. Visit this virtual experience site to learn more and register today.
Today we're going to take a quick look at one of the most common and straightforward RHEV user scenarios --- Live Migration. You can read the full steps at http://red.ht/live_migration_rhev. Better still try it out for yourself with the RHEV 3.0 Beta (this particular lab takes about 10 minutes).
It's as easy as 1 - 2 - 3 (so easy even a marketing VP can do it) :
1) You can manually place VMs with one click --- handy when you really want to manage placement, for performance reasons for example.
2) Maintenance is inevitable like death and taxes, but at least RHEV 3.0 makes it easy. You can move all VMs off a host for maintenance in a single click too :
3) Hardware is expensive, that's why you started with virtualization in the first place. Make the most of your hardware with policies for performance or power management --- set them easily using thresholds. High water marks trigger VMs to be migrated to less heavily used hosts (if available), and low water marks trigger VMs to be migrated away from a system provided others are available below their high water mark so that host then be idled
Try it now with the free downloadable RHEV 3.0 Beta. The beta user pages include all the documentation, a user forum and tutorial videos for this and other common scenarios such as enabling power users to self provision, and high availability scenarios.
Enjoy, and let us know what you want to see in the next newsletter in 2 weeks time !
Chuck, Eddie, Navin, John, Kevin, Simon and the rest of the RHEV 3.0 marketing team !
